Dès leurs premières incursions en Occident à l'extrême fin du VIIIe siècle, les Vikings héritèrent une réputation sulfureuse. Indignés par le sort que ces prédateurs venus du Nord réservaient aux riches abbayes, les clercs brossèrent d'eux un portrait sans nuances: barbares païens d'une cruauté inouïe, égorgeant hommes, femmes et enfants, buvant le sang de leurs ennemis dans des crânes et sachant, de surcroît, mourir dans un éclat de rire. Cette image de monstres sans toi ni loi - certains même n'hésiteront pas à les qualifier plus tard de surhommes - va perdurer jusqu'à la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Depuis, pour démêler le faux du vrai, le mythe de la réalité, les chercheurs ont sollicité l'archéologie, l'histoire, la numismatique, la philologie, la runologie et proposé une lecture plus subtile de cette société scandinave. Pillards, certes à l'occasion, mercenaires au service du plus offrant, les Vikings furent avant tout des marchands: vendeurs de fourrures, d'ambre et d'esclaves, acheteurs de tissus, d'armes et de grains. Ils furent également de grands artisans, mettant au point, entre autres, un bateau extraordinaire, aussi maniable en eaux peu profondes qu'en haute mer. Le droit coutumier et la religion des Vikings, d'une grande tolérance, jouèrent un rôle important dans le développement de cette société sans préjugés qui ignorait la violence gratuite et la torture. Ces hommes, dont la civilisation dura près de deux cent cinquante ans (v. 800-v. 1050) et qu'un concours exceptionnel de circonstances a portés sur le devant de la scène de l'histoire, apparaissent ici tels qu'ils turent réellement, loin des fantasmes de notre imagination.
